My Lord,
With reference to my telegram of 5th January, 1921, I regret to inform Your Lordship of the death of Lance Sergeant R. C. Gardiner of the Hongkong Police Force which occurred on December 27th last.
2. An enquiry has now been made into the circumstance from which it appears that the deceased officer had received instructions to proceed on the evening of December 27th in company with another police officer to house No.315 Reclamation Street, Yaumati: infomation having been received that a robbery would be attempted on those premises that night. Their instructions were to meet there a party of Chinese detectives under the command of an Inspector, but owing to a mistake they arrived late at the rendezvous and entered No.315 after the main body of the police had already concealed themselves about the building. Lance Sergeant Gardiner hid himself under a table in the middle of the shop unknown to the police who were concealed at the back. Shortly afterwards the robbers entered the shop, where one of them lit a torch. The alarm was given and the robbers fled by the back door, having extinguished the torch, and in the darkness a shot was
